Reading this post from 2013 is like opening a time capsule — and the A Silent Film shows mentioned at #3 ended up being the spark that started everything. Those November 2013 concerts with The Music Maven and The Gamer Geek are woven into the DNA of my debut novel Musical Awakening. June Snow, the protagonist, is the girl who went to those shows.

The trip to England mentioned at the end of this post? That became the Oxford chapters of the novel.

2013 has been one of the best years of my life. I have gotten to do so many amazing things and meet so many wonderful people!  My life is truly blessed and I am thankful for everyday that I get to do what I LOVE! Here are my favorite moments from this perfect year!

What We’re Listening To: SDCC 2013 Edition

So, I’ve just returned from 2013 San Diego Comic Con…my feet still hurt, I need to sleep for about a week straight, and every panel is a blur, BUT I’m happy to report that this music nerd had plenty to get excited about at SDCC!

First, I was very happy to stumble upon Jermaine Rogers’ booth in the exhibit hall at SDCC.  As a music lover and concert goer I’ve admired his concert and band posters.  He had a poster from the Ogden Theater in Denver on display which made this Colorado girl quite proud.  He’s done artwork for a lot of bands I love including Band of Horses, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, and Queens of the Stone Age.  The Gamer Geek and I picked out a few small prints to bring home.  

Can’t wait to get these prints framed that Jermaine Rogers graciously signed for me!

I also stopped by the War Machine Marketing booth because I saw merch for some really great bands.  They had one of those wheels that you could spin and don’t ya know I won FREE MUSIC!  I won the Rock Paper Music sampler from Warner Brothers Music and when I turned the CD over I was delighted to see The Wild Feathers featured.  I mentioned that I loved the band, and one of the guys manning the booth, Dan, seemed pretty happy that I knew who The Wild Feathers were.  We had a nice little chat about the band and music in general.  At that point I was a very happy music nerd – so glad that the powers that be at SDCC understand that nerds love music, too.

Lastly, I was VERY fortunate to catch some live music while attending SDCC.  I got to see The Silent Comedy outside of the Con at the History Channel’s Viking Experience.  I’ve wanted to see them for a while and I was so excited when I saw that they would be playing during SDCC.  I raced out of the Being Human panel to get to the Viking Experience stage.   I made it there in record time and had time to catch my breath before The Silent Comedy took the stage – which was good because they took my breath away.  I was really happy to hear them play one of my favorite tracks Gasoline and the new stuff off their latest EP sounded great, too.   The Silent Comedy are the real deal folks…check them out!

San Diego Comic Con 2013: The Swag!

I don't know if I was too busy this year, or there just wasn't that much swag this year!  Even in past years the Gaslamp has had MASSIVE swag, but they were at an all time low as well.  Same goes for panels.  Of the 11 panels I attended I received one ticket {then proceeded to loose it}.

I was picker than usual on swag though to be honest.  I didn't take everything that was handed my way.  I had a list and on Sunday {I know too late} I went to gather it all.  I missed out on the Petco Yoda ears.  But really I wasn't too sad to miss anything.  I was super happy to get the exclusive Mad Libs and ECSTATIC when after rolling around in the Ducktales money bin {a childhood dream come true} I was handed a Ducktales PIN!  From purchases at BBCA and Nerd HQ I was given the awesome lanyard and keychain.  But I the Ducktales pin is getting the award for BEST swag of the con!

If you have read my previous swag posts, you know that the SDCC free bags are my FAVORITE!  I wanted the WB Big Bang Theory bag, but Arrow was a good runner up.  I got a nice substantial tote from good friend and author James Morris {which he even signed} and the amazing guys at GraphicLab Designs gave me a sweet lil backpack!  I was on a mission from the get go to get the Geek Magazine Oblivion exclusive bag {with the ruins of SDCC convention center}.  I acquired that on Friday and they were already almost out!  Thank you SDCC Unofficial Blog for the awesome Pop Chips bag FULL of swag and don't ask me where the zombie bag came from...it just popped up one day in our piles of stuff back at the house.

I had a HUGE list of things I wanted to buy this year and was able to get ALMOST all of it!  I had my eye on the amazing BBCA Doctor Who and Sherlock tees but the line for that booth was RIDICULOUS!  Preview night we waited in a pre-line for a LONG time to no avail.  Come Thursday I was worried they would be all gone.  But Being Geek Chic came to my rescue and conquered the line!  I got James Morris' sequel to Skybound, Water Tower, stay tuned for giveaway!  I bought ALL things Futurama and was able to acquire {due to newest and most awesome friend Adam} the Back to the Future Lego set!  He bought it for me Thursday, they were gone the next day.  Nerd HQ had so many amazing tees, but by the time I made it to their merch table they only had 1 out of 3 I wanted.  I also bought a button and magnet from them.  Since they didn't have some of the tees I wanted, they were kind enough to give me a 15% off code for an online purchase and that has been made!

Finally the mini David Tennant in a dashing tux is sitting on my desk with his sonic screwdriver!

One more thing.  I usually try to be super positive and not say anything that isn't going to build people up or support us nerds, that being said, I was super disappointed in the swag given out at the Dexter panel.  I didn't attend personally, The Hunny and Gamer Geek did and were both given a ticket for the fulfillment room.  We were SUPER excited about this as it was Dexter's last year and it is one of our MOST favorite shows!  Come to find out the swag was this....

A paper fan that looks like an egg with a cut on it.  There were no Dexter bags this year {my all time favorite swag of the last 4 years} no buttons, not even a tattoo like last year.  This was pretty insulting.  I would have rather had nothing than this.  They could have even given this out IN the panel rather than make people fight through the crowds and lines.

San Diego Comic Con 2013: Day 4

The LAST DAY!!!! :(  We missed out on the Doctor Who panel, but tried for the autograph signing.  There were 1,000 people in line but only 100 tickets.  We didn't get in.  BUT The Music Maven was able to get into the Community signing!

The best part of the LONG line was FINALLY being able to meet my good online {now real life!} friend Leonard all the way from the UK!  He runs the G+ SDCC group and is now a SDCC staffer.  If you are not following him on Twitter please do.  He is such a fun chap to talk to!

After NOT getting into any signings, I was able to roam the floor and see everything I was unable to see in the days prior.  I had a long shopping list of swag to collect and things to see.  Here is the amazing Futurama toy I purchased this year.  I love seeing these every year, I hope Toynami continues to produce them!

After a nice sit down lunch at Burger Lounge and a quick stop by the Geek and Sundry lounge {GREAT SWAG} the sister in law informed me that Nathan Fillion was going to do a Smiles for Smiles photo booth at Nerd HQ!  We rushed over there to already find a BIG line, but we made in and eagerly awaited his arrival!  While we waited I found out that my Twitter friend Barb was also around and ran over to say HI!  I was so happy to finally meet her in person and jump into a convo like we were already best nerd friends! 

Zach came out before the photo booth to thank everyone for coming out the entire week.  He had to whisper into the mic so I barely noticed he was there!  BAD NERD!  Hopefully he can get some rest and return to NYC with his voice!  I LOVE all that Nerd HQ does, it is such a great way to raise money for a great cause.  What wonderful people run Nerd HQ and volunteering all their time!

We were all surprised that it wasn't just Nathan in the photo booth.  Alan Tudyk was there too.  Nathan liked my Doctor cosplay and we shot the photo quickly.  When it was over I gave them both a big squeeze, BUT apparently it was a BIT TOO BIG for Nathan as he was "OUCH why'd you do that?!"  I then said sorry, sorry, sorry and ran away.  He was laughing of course, but I guess I don't know my own strength!

Then we headed over to the last panel of the con hosted by my friend Tony, entitled Multicultural Heroes.  He did such a great job and it was such a fun and eye opening panel.  Someone did video it, so I'll let you know when I see a link.

After the panel I was able to finally talk to Tony again.  We had only spoken briefly on Wednesday and Thursday.  I had my Geek Magazine and made him sign it for me.  I throughly embarrassed him.  But he is such a sweetheart, he laughed it all off.

Meeting up with all YOU readers of this lil blog was my FAVORITE part of Comic Con.  I do all this writing at home alone at my desk and it is so FUN to see how many of you actually read it and enjoy it!  Thank you so much for coming up to me and letting me know, it completely lifted my spirits and made me feel so blessed!  I love you all so much and I cannot wait to see you at next year's SDCC.  If we got to take a picture, please send it along!  I would love to add it to our Facebook page.  I will also add ALL my SDCC pictures there too!

San Diego Comic Con 2013: Day 3

Saturday started out a LOT better than Friday.  We were out of the house a bit late and made it into the Ballroom 20 line around 9am!  I am not gonna lie, I was sweating whether or not we would get into the Ballroom for Futurama, but alas we did!  There were tons of seats still available and we got to sleep in!!

We were shown the pilot to Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and I really enjoyed it!  They will do the entire story and wrap it up in one season.  We were also surprised by the announcement that Naveen Andrews will be playing the baddy of the season JAFAR!

Then what I had waited all morning for...the VERY LAST? Futurama panel!!!  The cast did a table read of the series finale act one.  That is always my favorite party of their panel, seeing the voices out in person!  I love how fast Billy West can switch between Fry, Zoidburg and the Professor.  I also love hearing John DiMaggio LOL as Bender!!  I videoed the entire thing and will post it on you tube!  They then showed us the animated act two of the same episode!  Then as usual, Matt and another Futurama artist did a draw off to the death!  Matt was convicted of cheating and sentenced to DEATH....by Snu Snu!!

After Futurama we RUSHED over to the Indigo Ballroom for Being Human at 4pm.  That was completely not necessary.  We had to wait in a bit of a line outside, but once in, there were MANY seats and I don't think the room was ever completely full while we were in there.  We got in to see The Originals panel.  Nothing of note to report, except that the actors were handsome!!

The hardest working man at Comic Con Chris Hardwick moderated The Awesomes panel with Seth Meyers and co.  They showed us the pilot, but it was meh.

Chris then came right back out for his Nerdist panel.  I LOVED that he did cosplay as Booker Dewitt from Bioshock Infinite.  It is so fun when the celebs get into the spirit of the con!  He has such a kind heart and I love how he is all about building up the fan community.  I feel the same way.  If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. :)

THEN BEING HUMAN!  They are always my favorite {tied with Futurama}!  The cast is SOOOO funny and soooo kind!  I live tweeted the entire panel for @BeingFans.  I was nervous, but they let me know I did a good job for them and I was still able to enjoy the panel and now have a record of what they said!  THIS is a show to watch if you are not already!  Here is a small video of the boys trying to re-enact a scene of Godzilla.

We were able to have a nice sit down dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory and even got to see Grant Bowler walk by twice!  After dinner we went and grabbed our blankets and headed to Petco Park for the Nerd HQ Serenity viewing!  

It was AWESOME!!  Alan Tudyk walked right past us pretending to sweep up things.  He brushed my brother in law's feet and bumped into The Music Maven.  She then proceeded to scream!  They went up and did a nice speech which I videoed. 

They then did a bit of commentary and it was a such a fun treat.  It was such a once in a lifetime experience to watch that awesome movie with such awesome fans!

As we exited the field, Zach and Nathan told us to come party in Nerd HQ and they both thanked us all for coming.  It was such a wonderful ending to an awesome night!  We then tried to get into the H Hall line for Doctor Who the next day, but YEAH....we went home and slept in our comfy beds instead :)

San Diego Comic Con 2013: Day 2

After an AMAZING and EXHAUSTING 1st day of SDCC, day two started off a bit rough...but we finally made it out of the house at noon!

My first stop HAD to be the Ducktales Money Bin at the Capcom booth located all the way at the end of the show floor in hall A.  There was a small line and a funny sign saying no jumping or diving in to the money bin.  Of course that IS the first thing I wanted to do, but ended up just gently falling into the pillow money!  While waiting in line the Ducktales theme song came on and and the entire line of ADLUTS {myself included!!} sang along, it was AMAZING!  The ladies working the booth were super sweet and helped with throwing the money up for a great shot!  When it was over, I was surprised by getting a Ducktales pin!  My favorite swag so far!

Then had to head over and get my Futurama fix in!  I had not been to get my annual picuture with the newest comic and it was great!  Bought the newest comic and their exclusive Comic Con comic collection.

Then I turn around and see Matt Groening signing comics!  I rushed around to the end of the line only to find it already capped.  So I walked back over to at least get a picture!  He was even signing a Futurama comic. 

Passing the lego booth, I noticed THIS sign.  Luckily a new special friend had picked one up for me on Thursday!!!  So excited for that new toy, it is awesome!

Then to get my buy on!  I hadn't been able to buy anything so at the Toynami booth I bought their three SDCC toys and was in Futurama heaven!

The Music Maven and I were able to meet up with Twitter friend Elsbeth and had a great time walking and talking and trading SDCC stories!  Don't you LOVE her Fringe tee!?

I HAD to stop by and say hi to our SherlockeDCC sponsors and great friends GraphicLab Tees!!!  They are such awesome and cool guys!  Thank you for all your support fellas!!

After FINALLY making it to the BBCA booth and buying ALL the things, I walk out to see these awesome cosplayers!

Being a Dexter victim...

and making friends with a raptor!  It was a GREAT and relaxing day.  I was so happy to finally check out the floor and meet more of you nerds!!!  Don't forget to say HI because I STILL have some buttons left!!

We also hit up NERD HQ again since last night the merch tables were closed.  I was able to get one out of the three tees I wanted, but was given a code for 15% off online purchase.  Will be picking up more!

San Diego Comic Con 2013: SherlockeDCC

Directly after the Sherlock panel we all ran over to the Brick + Mortar to begin set up for the SherlockeDCC party hosted by:  The Baker Street Babes, Being Geek Chic, Cara McGee, Sherlock DC and The Nerdy Girlie!

We had special Sherlock inspired drinks!

And we ended up having a FULL house by the end of the night.

I began checkin guests in at 7pm but they were lining up as early as 6pm!  Everyone got in easily and the party was ready to begin!!

We had some awesome cosplayers!

Cara was busy ALL night!!!

Then our special guests began to show up!  Sue Vertue and her husband Steven Moffat!!!  Sue loved mine and The Baker Street Babe's Sherlock wallpaper skirts!  They got to come on in, have a drink and enjoy the photo booth.  Everyone was so happy and surprised to see them.  We were all very grateful they took time to come out!  Thank you Sue and Steven!!! xo

Just as Sue and Steven were leaving another special someone showed up...Mark Gatiss!!!  Again the place when crazy!  He was able to have seat, drink a beer and enjoy the photo booth!  He ended his stay with a sweet lil speech.  Thank you Mark for taking the time to come and hang out!! xo
