Where did this year go?! 2015 went by in a flash! Thankfully, we had some great music to get us through the year.  Here are my Top 10 Albums – these are the albums that sound tracked my 2015.

10. Stages by Josh Groban: This album is my guilty pleasure – it’s SO not rock n’ roll.  I love all kinds of music, and I love Broadway musicals and the classics from the American songbook. Stages is such a beautiful compilation of some of my favorite songs including two songs from Les Miserables, and a medley from Into The Woods and Sweeney Todd.  If you’re not a fan of Josh Groban now, you will be after listening to this album. 9.  Dopamine by Borns: Borns had me with his first single Electric Love – I think I listened to it about a thousand times straight.  His EP was just as good and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on his debut LP – Dopamine didn’t disappoint.  It’s synth-y, dancey, and harmonic. 8. South/Bashful Creatures by Hippo Campus: Okay, I’m kinda breaking the rules here, but I’m obsessed with this band, and they just had to have a spot on this list even though their releases this year were EP’s and not full length albums. I love the interesting rhythms that are layered throughout their songs – it’s really difficult to sit still when you’re listening to Hippo Campus. I need a full length release from this band SOON! 7. And the Wave Has Two Sides by On An On: I love this three piece band. The first time I saw them it was me and about 3 of my friends – that’s it – in the whole venue. Oh, wait, there was a random drunk guy…but I don’t think he had a clue who was on stage.  That kinda depressing show didn’t dampen my interest or love of On An On’s music, and I was so glad when I saw them again this year that there was a great crowd that showed the band a lot of love. I’m sure their latest album has a lot to do with their growing following – And the Wave Has Two Sides is moody, atmospheric, and a steady listen from start to finish. 6. Chaos and the Calm by James Bay: Longtime Nerdy Girlie readers know that I have a thing for UK singer/songwriters – I just can’t help myself.  James Bay’s debut album Chaos and the Calm is an incredible debut album. He sings with a lot of maturity that some of his fellow British troubadours just don’t have.  Music Maven Approved Tracks: Hold Back The River, Let It Go, Move Together

5. What’s Real by MisterWives: MisterWives just make me happy. Their singles Our Own House and Reflections were my jams this year – I cannot listen to those songs without starting a one woman dance party.  What’s Real was the album that I most frequently had on blast this year. 4. Smoke + Mirrors by Imagine Dragons: This is an album that really didn’t become a favorite until I saw it performed live.  My first impressions of the album left me feeling like it was a victim of over-production, but beneath it all there’s still everything I love about Imagine Dragons: deeply personal lyrics, vulnerability, and solid musicianship. We saw the Smoke + Mirrors tour in Denver at the Pepsi Center, and even with a sold out crowd of 20,000, Imagine Dragons still managed to make it feel personal and intimate.  Music Maven Approved Tracks: Shots, Polaroid, The Fall

3. Story of an Immigrant by Civil Twilight: According to Spotify, Civil Twilight was my most played artist this year.  I love this band because they just don’t seem to follow a formula when it comes to their songwriting and arrangements – I feel like I hear something new and interesting every time I listen to Civil Twilight.  Music Maven Approved Tracks: Holy Dove, Story of an Immigrant, River Child

2. Hold My Home by Cold War Kids: It seems like 2015 was the year of Cold War Kids – I don’t remember hearing their music on mainstream radio more than I did this year. It’s about time that everyone woke up to the wonder of CWK – longtime fans are excited to see this band take off and get the recognition they deserve. 1. A Silent Film by A Silent Film: I know. I know. Nerdy Girlie readers were expecting this…A Silent Film owns our music loving hearts.  Despite our complete loyalty to A Silent Film, this self-titled album stands on its own merit. The opening songs, Something To Believe In and Lightning Strike, are radio-friendly – there is no denying Robert Stevenson and Spencer Walker know how to write a great pop hook.  The album is rounded out by the 80’s tinged tracks including Paralysed with a sing-a-long worthy chorus.  Lake Swimming is my personal favorite – I saw it performed live several years ago and I’m so happy to finally have a quality recorded version that I can listen to on repeat. And I really can’t talk about A Silent Film without talking about the ballads that they do so well – Lavender Fields and Where Snowbirds Have Flown just make my heart ache.  I was dying with anticipation for this album and A Silent Film didn’t let me down.  Music Maven Approved Tracks: Something To Believe In, Lake Swimming, Lavender Fields

The Nerdy Girlie:  What is your 1st nerd memory?  

The Music Maven:  My first nerd memory…I guess that would be always getting to be Princess Leia during kindergarten recess – that was in 1978/79.  I guess you could say I’ve been a lifelong Star Wars fan.  We would reenact Star Wars at recess and I was the only girl with long, dark hair.  I could rock the Princess Leia bun hairdo.   I was also into comic books when I was a kid – my dad bought me a new one every weekend – wish I had kept all of them!  My other big obsession was the Indiana Jones movies.  They had trading cards and I had them all.

TNG:  How and why did you start blogging? 

The Music Maven:  I don’t really consider myself a blogger – more of a contributor to The Nerdy Girlie.  It’s a family affair – I write and geek out about music, and my son, J.D., writes the game reviews.  But Megan gets all the credit – she’s the brains of the operation and I love seeing all the great topics she covers.  

TNG:  YOUR favorite blog?  

The Music Maven:  The Nerdy Girlie of course!  Megan is my authority on all things San Diego Comic Con.  I also love her Everyday Cosplay – she does a great job at paying tribute to her favorite fandoms through fashion.

TNG:  What is your favorite things to nerd out about?  

The Music Maven:  MUSIC.  I love music – it’s my constant companion.  I love listening to music, discovering new artists, reading about it, talking about it, going to shows, and now writing about 'What We're Listening To' for The Nerdy Girlie.  It makes me so happy to have someone tell me they started listening to a new band because of my recommendation.  I love supporting musicians that make the soundtrack to my life.  As for my more nerdier pursuits…I love Star Wars and Indiana Jones.  I am a Star Trek: Voyager fan – Kathryn Janeway is MY captain.  Love Firefly and Serenity…will be cosplaying as Kaylee at SDCC.  Don’t bother me when The Walking Dead, Vikings, Defiance, or Grimm is on.  I’m also a HUGE Twilighter – I know most nerds despise my favorite fandom, but it is the fantasy world that I love to get lost in.  I’ve been so lucky to visit the real Forks, La Push, various sites from the movies and to be able to attend a Twilight SDCC panel.  I’m not ashamed to say I’m Team Edward.

TNG:  Any tips for San Diego Comic Con?  

The Music Maven:  I’ve only attended one SDCC but it was definitely a learning experience.  My tips:  good walking shoes, bring snacks, ALWAYS have a Sharpie in hand – you never know who you’re going to run into, and just relax and enjoy.  You won’t get into every panel, but there is so much going on that there is always something exciting and interesting to do.  Oh, and respect the lines and be nice to people when they ask you “What’s this line for…where does the line start…where does the line end?”  

TNG:  Girlie things you love?  

The Music Maven:  I am most comfortable in my jeans and sneakers.  I like the idea of dressing up and being girlie but it’s soooooo much work!  I like reading about fashion and window shopping but when it comes down to shopping or dressing myself I usually have a nervous breakdown.  I’m that person that finds a shirt I like and I will buy it in five colors so I don’t have to shop anymore.

The Nerdy Girlie's Music Monday #8: 10 Songs To Nerd Out About!

I have been a lifelong fan of music.  It was my first fan-girl obsession {along with the NES and Popples}.  My music tastes back then were not as refined as now *cough* {Backstreet Boys, *Nsync and NKOTB}.  But with guidance from The Music Maven I have been introduced to some awesome bands {more props to follow!}.  

So let's roll the windows down, let our hair blow in the breeze and make up dance moves to these squee-able songs!  {in NO particular order!}

10.  Harbour Lights - A Silent Film.  First thanks to The Music Maven for introducing me to these awesome Lads.  Harbor Lights was one of her top ten songs of 2012 and with that song I fell in love.  When I found out they would be in San Diego for my 30th birthday I got a group of ladies together and we had an amazing night rocking out!  Finding out that the band were also kind was a bonus!  I was even more excited to be able to see them WITH The Music Maven...and the rest is history.

9.  Soldier - Gavin DeGraw.  I have been a fan of Gavin DeGraw since the beginning.  His newest album, Soldier caught me right away.  I am such a hopeless romantic and this song totally plays into that.  Plus it was easy to make up my own dance to {I only do that with songs I love}.

8.  Not In That Way - Sam Smith.  I have a really blessed life.  I don't have many troubles to deal with, but sometimes I'm weird and like to pretend.  That is when I turn to Sam Smith and THIS song.  I LOVE belting it out when no one is around and have all the FEELS {and the Oscar goes to...The Nerdy Girlie!}.  He is my go to writing inspiration and chill out music. #swoonmusic

7.  Pavement - Mona.  Mona was another of The Music Maven's top albums of 2012. The song she added Lines in the Sand was my first favorite, but after getting the entire album Pavement just grabbed my heart with its pure raw emotion.  This would totally be my karaoke jam!

6.  Nursery Rhyme - Bad Veins.  The Music Maven's top album of 2012 and I have to agree!  Nursery Rhyme just makes me want to get up and dance!  I was happy to have been able to see Bad Veins multiple times and they put on an AMAZING show!  BONUS:  The nicest nerdy dudes who are fun to talk to.

5.  Skip the Charades - Cold War Kids.  Another one of The Music Maven's all time favorite bands.  This entire album I love, but this particular song is my stand out!  You can feel the heartbreak in this song, I love songs with powerful emotion! {Insert my 2nd Oscar win}

4.  Kathleen {live} - Josh Ritter.  Josh Ritter is best heard LIVE.  I had never heard him before and my friend Susan took me to his show.  I fell in love right then and there with the way he emotes on stage and brings his songs to life.  You can see on his face how much he loves what he is doing!  Seriously that smile?!

3.  Chocolate - The 1975.  One word, chocolate.  Yeah I wanna hear a song about that amazing sweet!  Do you love eating chocolate?  Then you are going to LOVE rocking out to this song.  It is so completely delicious and infectious!  I dare you to not like it!

2.  Juliet - Royal Wood.  I credit Being Human U.S. for my love of Royal Wood.  Their first season had a few of his songs and that prompted me to get the vinyl.  His songs are so romantic and I am alway a sucker for the use of a piano in music!  As you will find out with most of these bands I have picked.

1.  Destroy You - The Filthy Souls.  Listen to just one note of this song, you will be hooked.  Before any lyrics were sung, I was done.  BUT that's not it!  Just wait till you get to that chorus!  Yeah you'll be dancing in no time.
  

As I was half way through this write up, I realized that it is difficult to explain why something grabs me!  There are so many songs out there, why do these ten do something different to me?!  What do YOU think of them?!  I would love to know if the feelings are mutual!

Also it looks like I need to see Sam Smith and Royal Wood this year!  They are the only band on my list I haven't seen live!

What We’re Listening To: A Silent Film Edition

In my role as “The Music Maven” I work really hard to share the music I love with anyone and everyone who is willing to listen.  Nothing makes me happier than someone saying they like one of “my bands.”  The Gamer Geek and I saw A Silent Film last year and became instant fans;  we told Megan aka The Nerdy Girlie that she needed to give them a listen.  Of course she became a fan and “my band” turned into “our band.”   The Nerdy Girlie team has featured A Silent Film here on the blog many times in the past year, and we finally had the opportunity to see “our band” all together as a group in Colorado.  It was quite simply a magical experience.  There is nothing better than seeing a band you love in the company of family and friends. This picture is evidence of how happy the music of A Silent Film makes us:

We saw A Silent Film in Boulder at The Fox Theater and in Colorado Springs at The Black Sheep.  We were joined by several Lamplighters (members of their online fan community), and I was so happy to have my friend Beth fly in from Minnesota for the show.  My friend Jen, my husband, and my sister all attended their first A Silent Film shows and they walked away new A Silent Film fans.  Mission accomplished!

I’ve been blessed to see them five times in the last year and these past two shows were the BEST yet.  Not only were these shows special because I was sharing them with the people I love the most, but also because we heard no less than five new songs,  I finally heard their song “Cuckoo Song” live, and they played a beautiful new arrangement of “Where Snowbirds Have Flown.”  I wish I could put into words how electric a live set with this band is, but I really don’t have the words, so my video of their new song “Lake Swimming” will have to do.  I love this song.  It’s brilliant.

Some bands make you want to dance, some bands speak to your heart, this band does both.  A Silent Film has given me moment after moment of musical healing, communion, and now shared memories with the people I love.  I wish there was some way I could repay them for it all, but all I can say is thanks for being “our band.”

Reading this post from 2013 is like opening a time capsule — and the A Silent Film shows mentioned at #3 ended up being the spark that started everything. Those November 2013 concerts with The Music Maven and The Gamer Geek are woven into the DNA of my debut novel Musical Awakening. June Snow, the protagonist, is the girl who went to those shows.

The trip to England mentioned at the end of this post? That became the Oxford chapters of the novel.

The Music Maven's Music Monday #26: My Top 10 Albums of 2014

What an amazing year in music it’s been.  Despite the somewhat gloomy state of the mainstream music industry, I heard more amazing music than ever this year and I’m happy to report that the live music scene is better than ever – which leads me to my Top 10 Albums of 2014.  It’s always hard to narrow down my list, but it’s a fun process to revisit all the albums I listened to and the ones that stuck with me over the year – these are the albums that had the most repeat plays over 2014 and found a place in my heart that will last for years to come.

10.  Benjamin Booker Benjamin Booker

The first time I heard Benjamin Booker I stopped in my tracks – his voice was raw and the guitar work was punk, rock, and blues infused. I had to find out who was making this wonderful racket – Benjamin Booker’s debut album is amazing.  I haven’t seen him live yet, but I will remedy that as soon possible!

9.  Morning Phase Beck

As a longtime Beck fan I always look forward to what this mastermind will do. When I heard the first single off of Morning Phase, Blue Moon, I knew I would love this album.  It’s just a gorgeous album from start to finish. Not a bad track on the whole album.

8.  Royal Blood Royal Blood

This band took the music scene by storm this year and deservedly so. The first time I heard this album I sat in awe – pure face-melting rock n’ roll courtesy of this Brighton UK duo.  So good!

7.  Heal Strand of Oaks

Strand of Oaks aka Timothy Showalter’s 4^th album Heal is a great guitar driven album.  It’s deeply personal lyrics hit you right in the gut and stay with your for a long time.

6. Hold My Home Cold War Kids

Cold War Kids is one of MY bands – a band I love so much it hurts sometimes.  Even with several band member changes over the past couple of years, the band hasn’t lost their stride. They continue to produce music that makes me happy. Looking forward to seeing them in January!

5.  Sylvan Esso Sylvan Esso

I had noticed all the buzz about Sylvan Esso, but hadn’t given them a good listen until I saw them live – they were so good live that I bought their album right there.  So impressed with this duo.

4.  Lazaretto Jack White

I love Lazaretto even more than White’s first solo effort Blunderbuss.  He’s one of the few artists out there that I have trust in – he does what he wants and never compromises his musical integrity.  Jack White hasn’t disappointed me yet.

3.  Ryan Adams Ryan Adams

Have always LOVED Ryan Adams – and this album is one of his best.  It’s the Ryan Adams that many have come to know and love, and listeners will find a comfortable place to rest in this album.

2. Listen The Kooks

This album was the surprise of the year for me. Listen is their fourth full length album and the band went into new territory with the help of producer Inflow.  The album opens up with a rousing gospel choir on the song Around Town.  The use of the gospel choir and R&B influences can be heard throughout the record, but not in a gimmicky way.  For a distinctively British sounding band, The Kooks display a lot of soul on this album.  And I like it!  There is no mistaking Listen for a Kooks album, but it’s nice to hear them take chances and the result is a fresh sounding album.

And my #1 Album of 2014

1. Sweet Disarray Dan Croll

What can I say…I love Dan Croll.  I was really looking forward to his debut LP and it’s better than I could’ve hoped for.   The album should’ve came with a warning because it’s like music crack – highly addictive.  It’s heavy on African rhythms, interesting guitar grooves, funky bass lines, beautiful harmonies, and lyrics that are playful and moving.  Sweet Disarray has the most plays on my iTunes account and the cd took up residence in my car stereo for months – it’s just an album that I keep coming back to. I saw A LOT of bands this year Pearl Jam, Imagine Dragons, Arcade Fire to name a few – but Dan Croll’s set at Larimer Lounge is still my favorite.

The Music Maven's Music Monday #2: Imagine Dragons

A Thank You To Imagine Dragons

Almost two years ago I went to see a band that a friend had been praising for awhile – they were just starting to get airplay and I wanted to check out their live show.  That band was Imagine Dragons and from the very first note I knew that they were going to be huge.  What an amazing two years it’s been for them – they’ve topped the charts, toured the world, and they won a Grammy.

I’ve been blessed to see them play small venues, acoustic sets, a hometown show in Las Vegas, at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater, and this past Saturday I saw them end their Night Visions Into The Night tour at a sold out Pepsi Center show in Denver.  Seeing a band go from playing for 100 people to selling out a 15,000 seat arena in a matter of years is pretty astounding – meteoric isn’t an understatement when it comes to describing this bands rise in popularity.  But the thing that has stayed the same, no matter how many people they’re playing for, is their energy and commitment to putting on an incredible show.

As Imagine Dragons popularity grew their stage show evolved and it was so much fun to see the staging, lighting, and visuals change over two years.  But it’s always been about the music for me and the way Dan Reynolds & Company can move a crowd – they can bring a crowd into a frenzy during one of their anthems or bring them to tender hush during songs like 30 Lives.

As an added bonus of seeing this incredible band of musicians take off,  I’ve been able to share the music and concert experience with friends and my amazing family.  Most importantly,  I shared every show, except the first one, with my son, J.D., aka The Gamer Geek.  I came home after seeing them the first time in awe and told him he had to see this band.  We went to see them the next night and he left that show with a new favorite band.  He LOVES this band – it’s their positive lyrics, exceptional musicianship, and the way they connect with their fans.  I could never thank Imagine Dragons enough for being a band that inspires and encourages my son to be the best person he can be – but that’s what they do through their art and for that I’m grateful.

So, after releasing a platinum selling debut album and touring non-stop, Imagine Dragons are winding down their tour and getting ready to take a break.  A well deserved break and an opportunity to start their sophomore album.  It will be awhile before we see them again – a bittersweet reality, but we wish them all the best on their journey to create their next album.  We’ll be ready for new music when they are and we’ll see you on the rail!!

#nerdgirlproblems: Obsession

I find writing very therapeutic.  Anytime I have a problem, complaint or rant, I write it out.  I never have to send it, publish it or even let anyone else see it, just writing it is enough.  But sometimes there are things that I NEED to share!  That is why I am so thankful for the nerd community.  I can turn to you guys and not feel alone, open up a dialogue and we can share TOGETHER!  Writing alone can be, well, lonely, but all I have to do is turn on Twitter, Facebook, write an email or read your comments to know that I truly am NOT alone!

As of lately I have been dwelling on obsessions, why I'm obsessed with some things and not others, what makes us obsessed with these things and WHY doesn't The Hunny understand!?

Current obsessions:

*Union Jacks - I don't have a specific date as to when this obsession came to full force, it might be around the time I go into Doctor Who, Sherlock and A Silent Film.  Needless to say, I'm obsessed.

Example:  The Hunny and I were out shopping for nothing in particular, just browsing.  We take the escalator up to the top floor of a shop and I turn the corner to see a Union Jack couch!  I about fell to my knees with excitement and a loud squee left my lips.  I was even asked recently on Instagram as to how many Union Jack items I own!  When YOU all notice...YES it is an obsession.

I can spot them a mile away and have a HUGE urge to "catch them all."  Though I have controlled my urge to buy {since we are going to the UK next year}, the desire is still there.  On this obsession The Hunny just roles his eyes, takes my camera or hands over the monies!

*The 1975 - On 5/18/2014 I posted The Gamer Geek's My Blog As A Mixed Tape post.  The entire team had done one {The Nerdy Girlie, The Music Maven} and per usual I proof read the post and get it ready for publishing.  Sometimes I scan, most of the time I read, not all the time dose what my co-writers post stick {ask The Music Maven! LOL}.  But this time something did.

Reading The Gamer Geek's playlist I saw a song named Chocolate.  Chocolate?  I love chocolate!  So I clicked on his link.  It took me to the song and it was from the first note I was hooked!  Since then I have listened to The 1975 EVERYDAY.  I've even got into the routine of taking my mini speakers into the bathroom and listening while I shower!  I take those speakers everywhere, even on vacation, and always The 1975 is playing.

Example:  While vacationing in Las Vegas with The Music Maven, we sat by the pool to relax and complain about how they were not playing any good music.  Chocolate then comes on the pool's sound system and I squeed loud enough to have everyone look my way!  Oops?!

I tried the other day to put my iPod on shuffle, and guess what I loved it! I heard some songs that I love and hadn't heard in a while and was enjoying myself.  But there was always this longing to go back to The 1975's album.  Then I thought, why?  I did a bit of research and since music gives me such a happy "high" my brain wants more and more of that "high."  Music I love = happiness = NEED = addict.  I find it highly interesting!  The human mind is such a complex thing!

As a fan-girl and a person, I know that I am super passionate about things, more probably than the average person.  I am highly emotional and have big and sudden leaps in moods.  Comparing myself to The Hunny who has none of those traits, can be rough.  He is on the LOW end of the emotional spectrum and I am on the HIGH end.   So it is hard when he doesn't understand my deep passion for things.  Luckily he DOES humor me {most of the time}.

That is when I turn to YOU and writing!  I know I have friends out there who feel the same way as I do, it is just hard when they are not in your everyday physical life.  Thank you for letting me write it out and thank you for always having my fan-girl back!
