Favorite Moments from Sherlock: The Abominable Bride

Two years! Sherlock fans waited two years for the Sherlock Special…and it was SO worth the wait!  Here are some of my favorite moments from the #SHSpesh! Do not read if you haven’t watched the special episode…SPOILERS!

Suffragette Molly:  Our first glimpse of our beloved Molly Hooper is in her usual role as coroner, but in Victorian England a woman having that kind of status would’ve been unlikely.  Leave it to Molly to assume the identity of a man to do the job that she loves – and she does it so well that no one, except Sherlock, is any the wiser!

Canon Mycroft:  Mark Gatiss portrayed Arthur Conan Doyle’s fat and lazy Mycroft so well – so different than the Mycroft that we’ve come to know on the television show.  The bet between Mycroft and Sherlock on how long Mycroft will live based on his gluttony was comical. The Holmes Brothers will make anything a competition!

Brotherly Mycroft: The relationship between the brothers is one of my favorite things about the television show.  There is so much tension between them, but underneath it all Mycroft wants to protect his brother -- even when Sherlock makes it difficult. The pain in Mycroft’s eyes when he realizes that Sherlock has gone off on a drug binge is palpable – sadly, this wasn’t the first time and he knows it won’t be the last.

MORIARTY!: He’s baaaack!  I don’t think I’ve ever loved a villain as much as I love Andrew Scott’s Moriarty.  He’s just delicious – every scene between Scott and Cumberbatch is electric! That said – there was a huge sigh of relief when we figure out that Moriarty is truly dead.

Mary Saves The Day: Victorian age Mary and modern day Mary are key to exposing Moriarty.  Amanda Abbington was brilliant in this episode, but I wish we could’ve seen more of her and Louise Brealey. I need more from these amazing women.

The Gown: Okay, how many of you saw Emilia Ricoletti’s wedding gown and said, “That’s my next cosplay!” Just me?  I don’t think so – I think we’re going to see a few Emilia Ricoletti’s at SDCC.

Return of the Mind Palace: Loved the Victorian version of Sherlock’s Mind Palace – I always love “seeing” the way Sherlock’s mind works.  It’s manic, puzzling, and exciting when we see him put all the pieces together. Some people didn’t like the fact that this episode wasn’t a stand-alone and didn’t like the back-and-forth cuts from modern day to the past – but I think it was a useful device to show how Sherlock was trying to reconcile his emotions and frustrations.  We eventually find out that everything was a drug induced dream – once again, we see our Sherlock is a flawed human being that pushes everyone that loves him to the brink.
Sherlock and John’s RelationSHIP:  Finally, I love that we get to see how Sherlock feels about John Watson through his own intimate, inner feelings.  Over the course of the show we’ve seen Sherlock express his love for Watson – remember his heartfelt wedding toast? But in The Abominable Bride we see how much Sherlock needs Watson’s respect, approval, and how much he fears letting Watson down. And, we see once again Watson come to Sherlock’s rescue – this time at Reichenbach Falls and killing Moriarty.  It was a great moment paying tribute to both Canon and past BBC Sherlock episodes.

It’s safe to say I LOVED the episode – I loved the trip back to the time of Arthur Conan Doyle, the fashion, and cinematography.  And I love that there was a tie-in to past episodes – the special got a little complicated bouncing between the past and present, but I think we got to know Sherlock a bit better than before which will help us understand our favorite detective in the next season. Sadly, I think our tormented Sherlock has some dark days ahead.

Favorite SDCC Booths: Titan Merchandise Booth 5537

SDCC is coming quicker than it has in years pass, don't you think?! Is it just me?! I feel like I have no clue what is going to be at SDCC this year and that might be a nice change! Surprises are fun!

A TEA-riffic Day Off With Adagio Teas!

A part of being a BIG part of being an Anglophile is worrying about what tea you will drink each day! I have a HUGE tea collection and even carry an emergency stash in my purse. I've totally busted that out at restaurants before. Who wants to pay $3 for a cup of tea? Weird probably, economic defo!
I was lucky enough to be sent a $40 gift card to Adagio Teas and I was SOOOO excited to use it. I've always loved that they have fandom teas! Mixing all my loves into one perfect thing! My good friend and co party host of SherlockeDCC, Cara McGee, makes all these lovely fandom teas and those were the ones I just HAD to buy! Doctor Who tea?! Yes please!
I had EIGHT new teas to try and they were all loose leaf. This was a struggle for this impatient American. Waiting for my water to boil, scooping out each tea {I only have ONE small lil strainer} and letting it brew, waiting for it to cool. I tried to make it an experience, but basically I just wanted to drink my tea! My favorite part out of all of this was smelling each tea! It was interesting how the smell made me make a immediate decision on wether I thought I would like the tea or not.
Based on the character art, the smell and the look of each tea, in my head I thought I knew what I would like. That wasn't always the case. I was happily surprised by which were my favorites and NO it wasn't 10! :) Here are my thoughts!

Smell - Subtle coconut which reminds me of something to sip on the beach!
Taste - Black Tea. Which is my favorite kind!
Smell - Christmas-y.
Taste - Orange-y. And the tea itself was too gorgeous not to share a photo of!

9th Doctor - FAVORITE!
Smell - Breakfast!
Taste - Like drinking breakfast! LOVE IT!

Smell - Cinnamon.
Taste - Sweet tea with a bitter after note. {Least favorite}

10th Doctor - 3rd favorite
Smell - Chocolate-y.
Taste - The one I thought would be my 1st favorite was not, but still up there! I love the hint of chocolate!
River Song
Smell - Medicine-y with a hint of fruit.
Taste - The medicine-y note was there, but with a bit of sweet fruit. Again another one that I had to share a picture of since the tea itself is gorgeous!

Smell - Sweet black tea.
Taste - Dark black tea.

Smell - Fruit Loops.
Taste - It’s like drinking Fruit Loops milk and tea. {Surprisingly good combo!}

A BIG thank you to Adagio Teas for sending me the gift card! I now have even more tea over flowing out of my kitchen cabinet. Always a good thing! Who wants to come over for a tea party?! I've had SOME practice now and one of my favorite posts I've written is An American Anglophile Tries To Brew A Proper Cuppa

Share your favorite tea with me in the comments below! Have you tried any of the fandom teas?

#nerdgirlproblems: Obsession

I find writing very therapeutic.  Anytime I have a problem, complaint or rant, I write it out.  I never have to send it, publish it or even let anyone else see it, just writing it is enough.  But sometimes there are things that I NEED to share!  That is why I am so thankful for the nerd community.  I can turn to you guys and not feel alone, open up a dialogue and we can share TOGETHER!  Writing alone can be, well, lonely, but all I have to do is turn on Twitter, Facebook, write an email or read your comments to know that I truly am NOT alone!

As of lately I have been dwelling on obsessions, why I'm obsessed with some things and not others, what makes us obsessed with these things and WHY doesn't The Hunny understand!?

Current obsessions:

*Union Jacks - I don't have a specific date as to when this obsession came to full force, it might be around the time I go into Doctor Who, Sherlock and A Silent Film.  Needless to say, I'm obsessed.
Example:  The Hunny and I were out shopping for nothing in particular, just browsing.  We take the escalator up to the top floor of a shop and I turn the corner to see a Union Jack couch!  I about fell to my knees with excitement and a loud squee left my lips.  I was even asked recently on Instagram as to how many Union Jack items I own!  When YOU all notice...YES it is an obsession.
I can spot them a mile away and have a HUGE urge to "catch them all."  Though I have controlled my urge to buy {since we are going to the UK next year}, the desire is still there.  On this obsession The Hunny just roles his eyes, takes my camera or hands over the monies!

*The 1975 - On 5/18/2014 I posted The Gamer Geek's My Blog As A Mixed Tape post.  The entire team had done one {The Nerdy Girlie, The Music Maven} and per usual I proof read the post and get it ready for publishing.  Sometimes I scan, most of the time I read, not all the time dose what my co-writers post stick {ask The Music Maven! LOL}.  But this time something did.
Reading The Gamer Geek's playlist I saw a song named Chocolate.  Chocolate?  I love chocolate!  So I clicked on his link.  It took me to the song and it was from the first note I was hooked!  Since then I have listened to The 1975 EVERYDAY.  I've even got into the routine of taking my mini speakers into the bathroom and listening while I shower!  I take those speakers everywhere, even on vacation, and always The 1975 is playing.

Example:  While vacationing in Las Vegas with The Music Maven, we sat by the pool to relax and complain about how they were not playing any good music.  Chocolate then comes on the pool's sound system and I squeed loud enough to have everyone look my way!  Oops?!
I tried the other day to put my iPod on shuffle, and guess what I loved it! I heard some songs that I love and hadn't heard in a while and was enjoying myself.  But there was always this longing to go back to The 1975's album.  Then I thought, why?  I did a bit of research and since music gives me such a happy "high" my brain wants more and more of that "high."  Music I love = happiness = NEED = addict.  I find it highly interesting!  The human mind is such a complex thing!
As a fan-girl and a person, I know that I am super passionate about things, more probably than the average person.  I am highly emotional and have big and sudden leaps in moods.  Comparing myself to The Hunny who has none of those traits, can be rough.  He is on the LOW end of the emotional spectrum and I am on the HIGH end.   So it is hard when he doesn't understand my deep passion for things.  Luckily he DOES humor me {most of the time}.

That is when I turn to YOU and writing!  I know I have friends out there who feel the same way as I do, it is just hard when they are not in your everyday physical life.  Thank you for letting me write it out and thank you for always having my fan-girl back!
What are you obsessed with?!  Do you have someone in your day to day life you can relate to?!  Is it a girl thing or do my nerd guys have obsessions too?!  I'm always here if you need someone to fan-girl out with from a distance!

The Music Maven's Music Monday #15: Getting to know Gemeni

The Nerdy Girlie introduced you to the twin sisters duo Gemeni after the SherlockeDCC Party at this year’s San Diego Comic Con – we instantly fell in love with their witty Sherlock inspired songs and beautiful harmonies.  I recently had a chance to interview Lisa and Gina Gomez about the challenges of the music industry, their musical influences, their sisterly bond, and maybe just a little bit about our shared love of Sherlock…
Can you tell me about the name Gemeni – does it have special meaning?
Lisa: Funny story. There was a talent show on our college campus one day. While we were filling out the form, it asked for our act's name. We had to come up with it, right on the spot so we looked at each other and said Gemini. However, the spelling...we spell it differently. There was a band in the 80's called Gemini but we love the name so much that we stuck with it and misspelled it so we wouldn't run into any copyright issues. But the real answer...We've always been branded "twins" and not as individuals and we thought it'd be ironic that that would be our band name as well.

According to your bio you’ve been performing together from a very early age – was there ever a time when you thought you’d go your separate ways and perform as solo artists?
Lisa: Absolutely not. I always knew if I wanted to do music, I'd never want to do it alone. There was a time in college that Gina had given up on music altogether and I was pursuing it alone and it was an awful few months. I eventually convinced her to join me again and I'm forever grateful.
I think people are fascinated by twins – do you think your special relationship is an advantage/disadvantage in the music world?
Gina: I've always thought of it as an advantage. There are a few twin bands out there, and a few sister bands, but it's still something that sets us apart. Not to mention our harmonies... :) However, since that alienates us, it can be tough trying to find other acts to play gigs with, whether we’re opening for them, etc.

Tell me a bit about your debut album “More Than  Me.”
Gina: More Than Me is a good mixture of the first few songs that Lisa and I had ever written. What I hope listeners get from it is that we're two vocalists who like edgy themes in pop music. A Stake in My Heart is sexy, but still different in the fact that it is very contained, very mysterious. It's asking a man to come and prove his worth. 21st Century Society is subtlety making fun of pop songs and the nature of the music industry. Goodbye is a song about betrayal and how it's not okay to hurt someone you care about. More Than Me, which our album is named after, is our ballad anthem about believing in yourself and your destiny. Not that these themes haven't been used in pop music before, but I hope it gets people to think a little more than when they listen to songs on the radio now.
You have a wide range of musical influences – who are you listening to now?
Lisa: Andy Grammar. That man is one of the nicest people I've ever met and he's a killer songwriter. I've joked to Gina that he writes the songs I wish I could write. His lyrics are just so honest. He has a song called "Holding Out For You" that talks about virginity and how he held onto it until he met the perfect girl. Wow. That takes guts to be so honest and he can sing and write a catchy melody too. He's the perfect example of a great pop artist to me.

The Nerdy Girlie Team discovered you through the Sherlock community – can you talk a bit about what Sherlock means to you and how your Sherlock inspired songs came to be?
Lisa: Sherlock is my favorite still running show. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favorite show ever, but, I never thought another show would take some of its attention away from Buffy, and that was Sherlock. Sherlock came to me in a very stressful part of my life. I was having severe stomach issues for several months last year and watching Sherlock was the only thing that made me calm down. I felt so indebted to that show that I even got a tattoo! I got Moriarty's "I O U" apple, not just because he's my favorite character, but because I felt like I owed that show for getting me through that awful time. But yes, Gina and I loved Sherlock's and Moriarty's relationship so much. They're completely different, yet frighteningly similar.

I've always tried to find the most complex and wonderful hero/villain relationship in any fandom that I'm in, and I finally found it in Sherlock. Not only is the writing amazing between them two, but Benedict and Andrew knock it out of the park. Their chemistry only adds fuel to the flames. In honor of that, we decided to write a song based off of that relationship. It took months to figure out the melody of the chorus of this song...the struggle to write it gave me nightmares. I wish I was kidding. I just wanted it to be perfect because I love the relationship so much. The melody finally came to me one day and then writing the song probably took 30 minutes. But of course, I can't not write a song about Sherlock and John. I love them as well. I think Moriarty and John complete Sherlock. I don't think he's entirely happy if one of them isn't in his life.

But back to John. I love the dynamic because Sherlock and John are so different, yet they find solace in each other. An unlikely pair, an unlikely duo but when they're together they make perfect sense. I really wanted to highlight the positive aspect of their relationship in the song "I've Just Got One."  What they do for each other, how they make the other's life better. We've only written two Sherlock songs but hopefully they're not the last!
Can you speak to your writing process – music or lyrics first, do you write independently?
Gina: We used to write independently a lot more but now we write together. Melody is first and foremost. Once we get a catchy hook or chorus out, then we put lyrics to the melody. Once we figure out the melodies in the verse and bridge, we put lyrics to that. And then finally, we add the music underneath all of that.
We have been experimenting lately with writing lyrics first… Some of those songs might make it into our next album!

Your hopes for Gemeni – are you working on any projects at the moment?  Do you play certain venues regularly – where can people see/hear you?
Gina: We hope to sing for as many people as humanly possible. Whether that means a recording contract or managing ourselves independently. Fame isn't the objective; it's the ability to perform as much as possible. If they go hand in hand, so be it, but we really wouldn't like that lifestyle. We’re not materialistic people or attention seekers. Right now, YouTube is where people can look for us as we plan to release more than a few music videos by the end of the year. Who knows? Maybe a super secret, super cool Sherlock video coming out soon…?

Final question – how do you think Sherlock faked his death?
Gina: I originally thought it had something to do with the bicyclist hitting John with some of the H.O.U.N.D. gas and making him think of his greatest fear, which is to see Sherlock dead…
But when Series 3 aired the first episode “The Empty Hearse”, the second it was over, something clicked with me… I had a thought that every explanation was correct. I feel like there is some truth to every “fake” theory that was shown in the episode. I think if you combine all of them, that’s the right theory!

After Series 2, Lisa and I have always thought that Sherlock and Moriarty had this secret plan that they both were aware of. What if Sherlock thought Moriarty’s plan was brilliant, and thought it was so brilliant, he had to end the game by jumping off the roof?  What if they were both aware that they were both going to fake their suicides, and had to go through the motions of doing them? Time will tell…

Interesting theories ladies!  Huge thanks to Lisa and Gina for taking some time to answer some questions – I hope you enjoyed getting to know Gemeni a little more.  Give these fabulous ladies a listen and stayed tuned because good things are to come from this up and coming duo!

San Diego Comic Con 2014 - The Swag

Since my first year at SDCC the swag count has gone down dramatically.  This year has been the least I have ever seen.  But that means that the things I do acquire are of higher quality and mean more to me.  Here are a few of my favorites and a few things that took my money!
This year everyone at the SherlockeDCC party got an awesome swag bag!  I am so excited to read my High Voltage Magazines!  They are THE people to talk to if you want to learn about awesome music {other than our very own Music Maven}!  Make sure you check out their weekly podcast and follow them on Twitter!
Thanks to Adagio Teas, I will be sipping some yummy SherlockeDCC tea blend while writing all my wrap up posts!
One of my favorite swags from the very beginning has been the HUGE bags that are given out.  I always collect as many as I can and a LOT of them went into making my Swag Bag Dress this year!  None have ever come more in handy than NBC's Constantine bag!  There was a freak summer shower while waiting in the Lego line and it kept me nice and dry!  I had to take care of my shoes :)
Speaking of the Lego line, I won my very FIRST Lego Mini Figure...UNI-KITTY!!!!  It was a two hour wait in the rain for one second of pure fright, but I won!!  Four out of six in our group did.  I have never worked so hard for swag in my life and it was completely worth it!  I cannot wait to try again next year!
It seemed like outside the con was where it was at for SDCC swag!  You didn't need a badge to play the Simpson's carnival game outside the Hilton Bayfront!  Pink donuts?  Yes please!
Nerd HQ had its annual mini con at Pet Co Park and jumping in the photo booth for some free pictures was one of my favorite things to do!  They even upload them straight away to your Facebook, Twitter, email and Instagram!
The best swag inside the con goes to The Outlander booth!  Along with highly attractive booth cosplayers, they were one of THE busiest booths around because of their gorgeous set up and awesome swag!  The Music Maven {Outlander's BIGGEST fan} went to the booth everyday!  She sadly missed out on the tee and tote, but was happy with the badges, shot glass, iPhone cover and bandana!
Now for what I bought!  My very first stop on Preview Night was the BBC America booth!  It was there that I bought Sherlock stuff for The Music Maven and Doctor Who stuff for myself and The Gamer Geek.  Upon exiting the booth though, I didn't see the heart tee and David Tennant tank!  It took until mid Sunday for me to make it back and purchase those.  I was so happy to have them take my money for a second time!  I was even wearing my hat on Sunday and they remembered me!

What was your favorite swag of the con?!  Did you notice the lack of it on the floor?!  One I'm sad I missed out on was the HUGE Reptar swag bag and the Jurassic World poster.

San Diego Comic Con 2014 - Night Two {SherlockeDCC}

Last year The Nerdy Girlie co-hosted the first SherlockeDCC Party at San Diego Comic Con along with the Baker Street Babes, Being Geek Chic, Sherlock DC, and Cara McGee.  Almost as soon as last year’s party ended we started making plans for this year’s party, and with the absence of any official Sherlock panels or events at SDCC, the fans were really clamoring for a party to celebrate all things Sherlock.  It was our absolute pleasure to play host to 500 party guests on Friday night.
Our fabulous view from the 9th floor of the San Diego Central Library

The party took place on the 9th floor of the beautiful San Diego Central Library.  The venue was amazing with stunning views of Petco Park, the bay, and the Gaslamp District.  We can’t say enough about the amazing staff at the San Diego Central Library – they went above and beyond to make sure the SherlockeDCC Party went off without a hitch.
Gemeni performs at SherlockeDCC

Swag bags, food, Sherlock themed drinks, a Shoot Sherlock game, custom Sherlock manicures, merch, vendors, and a huge raffle awaited party goers.  The party was a huge success and we couldn’t have done it without our generous sponsors and contributors.
SherlockeDCC attendees had fun wearing Sherlock attire and deerstalkers provided by Elope, Inc.

Thanks to the following sponsors and contributors – please visit their websites and support them! Remember to tell them you were at the SherlockeDCC Party!  Thank you to the SherlockeDCC Sponsors without which we would have no party!

Geek Girls Gab with Melissa Creates

I found Melissa on Instagram one evening while pursuing hashtags.  I quickly found out that she was a fan of "our band," A Silent Film!  BONUS she's a fangirl of Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and Star Wars!  Needless to say, we became INSTA-BFFs!  She has some amazing nerdy and girlie things in her Etsy shop, but her I'm Famous On My Blog line jumped out at me as truly original and fun!  Check out her shop and our interview below!

Melissa is the editor of MelissaCreates.com, a blog dedicated to living simply and entertaining stylish. On the blog you’ll find a variety of parties, recipes, DIY projects, geek chic inspired celebrations and more! Melissa currently resides in Orlando, Florida with her handsome husband and her yorkie, Dodger. When she isn't blogging she makes frequent visits to Harry Potter World, coffee shops and local concerts

The Nerdy Girlie:  What is your 1st nerdy memory?
Melissa:  I’ve always been passionate about music (hello, Romeo & Juliet soundtrack and young Leo) but as an adult I would have to say the Twilight Saga and Harry Potter totally kicked my nerdy-ness into high gear!  It wasn’t until I entered my 20s that I had the confidence to let my nerd side show. I did whatever others thought was “cool” and my interests were those of others.  I allowed people to mold me.  Now, I watch others of all ages not holding back when it comes to sharing their favorite things and it makes my heart so happy.  I’m more me than I’ve ever been and obnoxiously happy about it.
TNG:  How and why did you start being crafty?  Where do you find your inspiration?
Melissa:  I’ve always enjoyed crafts and as a kid got in trouble for getting glitter and glue stuck to the dining table.  I really enjoy making things that have my own spin on it.  I turn up the music and get crafty on the regular.
Most of my inspiration comes from music and movies.  I’ll notice an outfit in a movie and say oh I can totally make a headband like that or hear a song that inspires a canvas art DIY or an entire dinner party themed display.

TNG:  When and why did you decide to start your own Etsy shop?
Melissa:  I attended a conference for creative’s in January, Alt Summit.  Alt Summit totally gave me the push I needed to get the shop open after debating for months and months to do so.  I’m such a big fan of many books and series that I can’t contain my excitement, a shop that showed my fan love was totally needed. Wink.

TNG:  YOUR favorite Etsy shop?
TNG:  What is your favorite thing/things to nerd out about?
Melissa: Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Vampires, The Mortal Instruments, Star Wars, Lord of The Rings, Marvel, Sherlock, Doctor Who and Indie Music.

TNG:  Girlie things you love?
Melissa:  Tights. I could wear tights everyday for the rest of my life. I have a ridiculous amount and recently saw Christina Perri live and she had on black tights with stars on them...I must own them.  I also crush on maxi dresses and tank tops.  It’s not very girly but I always have my nails painted black.

Along with all the amazing stuff she does on her blog and in her Etsy shop, Melissa also is the founder of the Blog Fete Blogger Convention.  If you are in or around Orlando, Florida September 27th you need to check it out.  I have always wanted to attend a blogger convention and if I was on the East Coast I would be there in a second!  Take advantage for me!
