The Music Maven's Music Monday #14: Girl Power Edition

I met so many amazing women at San Diego Comic Con this year – women who are artists, entrepreneurs, and students – and it got me thinking that I should feature some girl powered music this week.  These are the female artists or female fronted bands that deserve Super Hero status in my book.

Brody Dalle – You might know her as the lead singer of the bands The Distillers and Spinnerette, but this fiery lady released her solo album Diploid Love in May and I’ve been listening to it ever since.

Aja Volkman – Aja Volkman is the energetic lead singer of indie rock band Nico Vega.  She’s a powerhouse on stage and has such a sweet and uplifting relationship with her fans.  Nico Vega’s newest single I Believe (Get Over Yourself) is a song to put you in the right frame of mind when self-doubt starts sneaking in.

Courtney Barnett – This young Aussie is taking the independent music scene by storm.  My friend Stewart Gibson turned me onto her – she couples self-deprecating lyrics with some pretty fantastic guitar work.  Loved her Tiny Desk performance for NPR.

Emily Armstrong and Siouxsie Medley  – These ladies bring a whole lotta girl power to the band Dead Sara.  The first time I heard this band I stopped in my tracks and thanked the musical gods for giving today’s rock n’ roll a much needed female boost.  These ladies are fearless.

Genevieve Schatz --  Genevieve Schatz fronted the band Company  of Thieves – they announced in January of this year they wouldn’t be releasing any more music as a group.  She has such a sweet and unique voice with just enough grit behind it to make your heart ache.  I’ve yet to see her perform live – last time I had Company of Thieves tickets the show was cancelled due to illness, but seeing her perform live is high on my “To Do” list!  According to her Facebook page she’s recording new music – here’s a link to a new music from Genevieve:  http://www.hellogenevieve.com/

And, finally, the queen of all things rock n’ roll…
Joan Jett – I’ve been a fan of Joan Jett since I was a kid and have always said she’s who I want to be when I grow up.  She’s been a part of my life for so long I can’t imagine rock n’ roll without her.  She’s still touring and putting out great music.

And there you have it – the ladies that I love to listen to.  Give them a listen – they’re guaranteed to inject your day with a little more girl power.
