5 Fandom Friday: Gateway Fandoms That Made Me Who I Am Today

I have been a nerd my entire life, though that is not what I have always called it.  Not because I was afraid, but because, I was just doing what I loved.  Here are the five fandoms that made me the proud nerd I am today!
1.  Vampires.  Besides music, vampires are the first thing I remember obsessing over.  From the first time I saw an Are You Afraid of the Dark episode, to Interview With A Vampire {my favorite film} to Twilight, vampires have followed me from an early age.  I go into more depth of my love HERE.
2.  Futurama.  My next obsession came with Futurama.  I remember it airing for the first time on Fox, but it wasn't until it was a staple on Adult Swim that I began watching.  It soon became my nightly lullaby and I celebrated the release of the films and it's two time revival.  I can quote almost every episode and love dropping them into conversations!  {ps I AM wearing shorts in this picture!}
3.  Harry Potter.  I was working at a movie theater when the first film came out and hated the madness it brought.  Though I finally broke down, bought the book, watched the first film and then went straight away to buy books 2-4.  I did midnight releases for the books and movies and now have  a yearly tradition when The Hunny and I marathon the entire series during Thanksgiving.
4.  Doctor Who.  I had been told for years to watch Doctor Who.  I'm not quite sure why I never did, maybe because I was scared I wouldn't like it.  That fear was remedied quickly and as soon as series 2 rolled around I had MY Doctor and my favorite episode.  The rest is history and it is the 2nd most popular topic on my blog other than San Diego Comic Con.
5.  Anglophilia.  First Titanic.  Second The Spice Girls.  Then Harry Potter and Doctor Who then pushed me over the edge.  Enter A Silent Film and I cannot get enough of the wonderful UK!  Its telly, films, pop culture, people and music.  My trip over Christmas 2013 cemented my love for the country in my heart and I am currently saving for my return.  Watch out!

That's it!  Our first 5 Fandom Friday!  Share your's in the comments below or tweet them to me @thenerdygirlie or @SuperSpaceChic and we will RT them!  I cannot wait to start reading yours!!

I love this idea! Your Harry Potter picture is adorable. I have a black wand like that which I toted around when I was way too old for it to be cool. Glad to see someone else has no shame as well ;)

Here's my first 5 Fandom Friday! I twisted it a bit, and did the top 5 book series that made me who I am today. Thanks for the inspiration and I can't wait to see everyone else's fandoms!!

Interview with a Vamoire is one of my faves too! I watch it at least once a year if not more.

I didn't take part this week, but I'm already working on a post for next Friday!

Excellent fandoms! I didn't read Harry Potter right away either. It wasn't until the third book was out that I gave them a try - and LOVED them! :D

I remember watching the first Futurama episode too! I love that T-shirt!

Great list! Futurama was one of my first "big" fandoms too where I actually geeked out about it with other people. :)

Love these! I also love that you're a late addition to the HP fandom. I was, too. Love this link up! Here's my post: http://distractedblogger.com/2014/10/03/5-fandom-friday-gateway-fandoms/

Love your list!! I never fully got into Futurama but the few eps I would catch I enjoyed. I want to London/Cardiff last year and I am itching to go back. It was beautiful and amazing! I definitely understand your feelings!

As a Brit, I find it kinda hard to understand Anglophilia but when you do get to London again, let me know & I'll sort out some recommendations for you :)

MEGAN ELVRUM said...

Nev, I always wonder what you Brit's think of us American's obsession! Thank you for putting up with our fangirling! :) I would LOVE to have a chance to hear your recommendations!! xx

Awesome Steph! I can quote entire episodes, no one probably likes watching them with me any more :) xx

MEGAN ELVRUM said...

I'll be holding you to that B! ;) xx

I think I need to watch it again! It's been a while! xx

HARRY POTTER!!! Also, omg The Spice Girls - also a huge part of my life! I definitely went through an Anglophilia phase - not that I still don't love me some Brit things (TV, music, celebs!), but I'm definitely not buying all things Union Jack anymore. The love is just more uh, specifically focused now? :)

Great list! You've already seen mine. :) Gateway Fandoms

Love this idea, in fact I've got a post half written up in my drafts similar to this so I'm going to make it my mission to get it finished up and posted on my blog tonight YEY! Also I'm a Brit so I never quite get the American obsession with us that being said I do have quite a few items with the America flag on them and I probably watch an excessive amount of American TV so you guys probably see me the same way XD

We have a common gateway fandom! I too am in love with Interview with the Vampire. My mom must have thought I was so crazy, because I would watch that movie on repeat. What can I say, I was really into blonde Tom Cruise as Lestat. Hello! ;)

Kristin Hackett said...

OMG that one episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark where the vampire comes out of the black and white film and tries to bite everyone in the theater is probably my most traumatizing childhood memory! I wanted to sleep with garlic near my bed afterwards and my parents said no way! Also, so glad that were able to team up for this<3! I wish you were coming to NYCC!

MEGAN ELVRUM said...

Thank you K, wish we could live closer!!! NYCC is gonna be a blast, one year I'll make it over there! Cannot wait to hear about it! xx

MEGAN ELVRUM said...

Erin! LOL Sounds like something I would do too! xx

Whimsy and Noir said...

Lol.. God I was SO into vampires when I was a teen! I wanted to be one! Twilight kind of killed that love for me, but Anne Rice's novels are the best! Love the Interview movie, and I'm looking forward to the new Lestat book! I still dig the Vampire Diaries too, but mainly because of Ian/Damon ;)

MEGAN ELVRUM said...

I'll have to try the books! I love the movie so much, I think I wouldn't like the books as much. If I could be one too I would ;) xx

Mine are up over at http://bibliosnark.blogspot.com This was a total blast. Mine included Unicorns (Unico and the Last Unicorn), Books (Christopher Pike and RL Stine), Buffy, Star Wars, and Empire Records. Oh but I could have added so much more. Great idea
