Geek Girls Gab with The Nerdy Girls

The story of how The Nerdy Girls came to be is simple, really. Brought together by fate, or maybe just the community boards of the ever awesome Nerd Machine, they bonded over a shared love of Chuck and the blonde Aussie goddess Yvonne Strahovski. Meeting up on a warm July morning down in San Diego, they spent the weekend fangirling at Comic-Con and further solidifying their bond by sleeping on the sidewalk like only a true pair of devoted fans would. It was only a matter of time before they decided that the awesome times couldn’t end and thus the idea for a blog focusing on all things nerdy but from the female perspective was born. Cause after all, we girls nerd harder than the boys!
The Nerdy Girlie:  What is your 1st nerd memory?
Erin:  This one is tough. I remember watching Star Wars with my dad when I was a wee one but that was many moons ago so it isn’t my most vivid memory. One I do remember though is that I used to be a HUGE Power Rangers nerd. I’m talking early 90’s rangers, not any of this new crap they keep churning out. I used to pretend I was the Pink Ranger when we played wagon wheel at recess. I was kind of a badass, not gonna lie.
Angela:  My first nerd memory is back in elementary school when I was really into X-Men. I spent a lot of money on those trading cards with all the characters from the extended universe on them. At that time I was also really into Barbie and Ninja Turtles, which is a pretty awesome combination, especially when it means April O’Neal has some competition.

TNG:  How and why did you start blogging?
Erin:  I’ve technically been blogging since my angsty teen years over on LiveJournal because I needed an outlet and the interwebz was a relatively new and amazing thing at that point. One of the main reasons I started The Nerdy Girls with Angie was because I was looking for a place to talk about my nerdy obsessions and have an outlet for getting a little snarky because I’m hilarious and why should the world be denied my wit and charm? I’m only half kidding. I had things to say and an English degree I wasn’t using for anything else so it seemed like a good idea!
Angela:  After going to numerous cons, Chuck related events, and just hanging out talking about nerdy stuff, Erin and I decided we should start the blog back in October of 2011. There didn’t seem to be a whole lot of girl geek/nerd blogs around that talked about more than just pop culture news, which was and is the goal of the site. We thought we could contribute our own brand of nerdy girl knowledge to the interwebs, and so it began!

TNG:  YOUR favorite blog?
Erin:  Right now roller derby has taken over my life so I really enjoy reading Elektra Q-Tion’s blog You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Loose Wheel. She has an amazing sense of humor and her entries never fail to be entertaining. She totally nerds out over derby and I love that. If we’re talking favorite blog in a more traditionally nerdy sense, I love the crap out of When Nerds Attack. Talk about getting your information on. Barb does such an amazing job getting any and all information out there that I know if I’m ever in need of something, I can go there and find it. It’s a super useful tool, especially for anyone attending SDCC.
Angela:  I don’t know if this is really considered a “blog”, but Lifehacker.com is one of my faves. It has so much good information about so many different things that are actually helpful in everyday life.

TNG:  What is your favorite thing/things to nerd out about?
Erin:  Oh there are so very many things I get nerdy about. Roller derby is at the top right now but then there are also television shows, comics, movies, conventions, music, KOTOR….I also get nerdy about make-up and purses.
Angela:  This is a no-brainer for me and everyone who knows me. Chuck! I love the show and everything around it so, so much. It’s painful how much I love it. So anything that has to do with it, I freak and geek out. Other things I nerd out about are Spider-Man, Ninja Turtles, Animation (of most any kind), and candy. I seriously love candy.
TNG:  Any tips for San Diego Comic Con?
Erin:  Wear deodorant!! I don’t know how many times I have to say this but nerd funk is not pleasant and you will be sweating. Also, pack snacks so that you don’t starve while you’re waiting around for a panel. OH! And the most important of all: If Matt Mira tries to get you to do anything with hot sauce just don’t. You can thank me later.
Angela:  Tons! We have a lot of articles and even a podcast about it on the blog. One would be to plan as far in advance as possible. I’m talking the day after SDCC. Another is to have sunscreen, deodorant, water and a portable charger on you at all times. Also, sleep before you get there and when you get home. If you miss something while you’re there because you want to take a nap, that is LAME! It could be a once in a lifetime chance.

TNG:  Girlie things you love?
Erin:  I love make-up. Urban Decay is my jam and will forever be first in my heart. However! I just bought some Sugarpill the other day that I’m really excited to try out. I have this vision for some phoenix inspired make-up and hopefully it will be amazing. I also love shoes and purses. I rarely ever carry a purse but I’m like a crack addict and can’t turn down buying a cute new purse. The same thing goes for shoes, especially boots. Nothing beats a pair of skinny jeans with some cute boots.
Angela:  Fashion and jewelry. I’m not big on the shoe and handbag craze, but I do love me a cute top with the right earrings and necklace.

Thank you so much to The Nerdy Girls Erin and Angela for answering our questions!  Really hope we can meet up at SDCC this year, I'm dying to hit up the NERD HQ party!
