Geek Girls Gab with House of Darkly

I'm Anne, and I'm a diehard geek. I've done just about every geek pursuit imaginable at one point or another. But as my "real job" I've been making handmade plush and other fun stuff under my brand House of Darkly since 2009. I'm currently based in Florida, but I've sold all over the world via Etsy, and I've been in gallery shows and exhibited at pop culture conventions nationwide.
The Nerdy Girlie:  What is your 1st nerd memory?
Anne:  My brother and I used to play in the basement of our house, and we had an old, teeny black and white TV down there. On Sundays my father would sit down there with us and watch Star Trek reruns. So one of my very first memories is the first few notes of Alexander Courage's theme, and "space: the final frontier."  I wasn't even two, but I remember it being on and asking him about it. When I got older, I used to make the family rush home from church so we didn't miss the beginning. Questionable priorities? Maybe. But my geek cred is unimpeachable.
TNG:  How and why did you start crafting?
Anne:  I did crafts off and on as a kid; I used to make little props and post-apocalyptic getups for my Barbies out of Scotch tape and scrap fabric. My mother used to make clothing and my grandmother taught me a little embroidery and knitting. I always flirted with one thing or another, but I didn't get serious about sewing until I started going to conventions in high school and wanted to cosplay. I was just so excited by the idea that adults walked around in costume because they felt like it. I started making plushies as costume props, then decided I enjoyed it more than costumes. My friends wanted to buy them from me so I tried selling some, and the rest is history. I keep at it because of the positive feedback; I love that my work makes people happy.

TNG:  YOUR favorite Etsy store?
Anne:  I'd buy up practically everything on Etsy if I had my druthers. But I adore Loveandasandwich's shop; her work is always great and makes me smile every time.
TNG:  What is your favorite thing/things to nerd out about?
Anne:  It would take less time for me to say what I won't nerd out about! Passionate is really my only setting. I'm now officially in the "Superwholock" fandom; you can talk endlessly about any one of those shows, so if you put fans of all three in the same room it's like a perfect nerd storm. I love talking about special effects and props. I love talking about science, especially where it intersects with fiction. And you can also really get me going on bit actors on genre TV shows shot in Vancouver from 1990-now, but I have yet to meet anyone else who cares. One day.

TNG:  Any tips for San Diego Comic Con?
Anne:  The two tips to rule them all: 1) drink water like you're in the Sahara. Drinking water seems obvious, but you do have to remind yourself to do it and it helps immensely. Most people are dehydrated all the time and don't know; it's a major cause of fatigue and headaches. 2) Stay open. You never know where or when your amazing Comic-Con moment(s) will happen, so keep your head up, literally and figuratively.

TNG:  Girlie things you love?
Anne:  Bizarre legwear is my weakness. So I'm in big trouble with Black Milk in the world. I have an absurd collection of tights and over-the-knee socks too; the weirder the print and the more obnoxious the colors, the better. I'm an adult, and I'll dress like a cartoon character if I want.
Anne and I at Stan Lee's Comikaze 2013!
Thank you Anne so much for answering our questions!  I am so in love with that fluffy pie I could cuddle and eat it at the same time!  You HAVE to stop by her Etsy store and check out ALL over her wonderful things! Etsy:  House of Darkly and Twitter:  @house_of_darkly.
