Geek Girls Gab with What A Nerd Girl Says

My name is Sara, I’m a college student working on my degree in history but my real passion is books and writing, especially in the young adult literature genre. I love SO many fandoms but some of my top ones include Harry Potter, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Mortal Instruments/Infernal Devices, Once Upon a Time and the Tortall world. I write my own blog at What A Nerd Girl Says and I currently have two self-digitally-published novels on Amazon. Oh and I love penguins…and being random.
The Nerdy Girlie:  What is your 1st nerd memory?
Sara:  My first nerd memory would have to be when I was about seven or eight years old. The original Star Wars trilogy had recently been released on VHS, I think the anniversary edition. My little brother, Joey, had recently broken his leg, and at two years old, was constricted to a body cast. The poor kid couldn’t do anything and it had to be frustrating. The one thing he wanted to do, over and over and over again, was watch the Star Wars trilogy. As his older sister, and the eldest sister of three brothers and two sisters, I always felt kind of responsible for them, and I spend MANY hours watching those movies. I think that’s the first nerd thing I was exposed to, and it remains one of my favorite fandoms.

TNG:  How and why did you start blogging?
Sara:  I started my blog about a year ago, May 2012, and it was honestly because of my friend Jackie, who runs seekingbazinga.com. I read her blog and absolutely loved it and thought that I could see myself writing a blog like that, but my own personal nerd girl stuff. I want to be a writer, as a career, and my blog is seriously something that helps with that. I get to write about all the cool things I love, and talk about the issues with reading and writing that I’m passionate about, and I’m able to write almost every single day.

TNG:  YOUR favorite blog read?
Sara:  As far as a favorite blog? I don’t really have a particular favorite. I enjoy reading The Urge to Write, because her blogs are mostly about writing and that’s something I’m truly passionate about. I like Seeking Bazinga because of the pure geekiness of it. I like The Nerdy Girlie because its nerd and girl, like my blog and I get inspiration from it. I also like reading TMI Source, because they are always on top of the Cassandra Clare news and I have no idea what I’d do without them.
TNG:  What is your favorite thing/things to nerd out about?
Sara:  Harry Potter, easily is the biggest one. I started reading Harry Potter when I was 9 years old, which is…sixteen years ago (WHOA) and it really means a lot to me, and I have four HP tattoos to prove that love haha. I’m also just a nerd about books, especially young adult books. I am constantly discovering new authors and rereading my favorites.  I’m always, always, always reading. I think authors are rock stars and I always get super nerdy at author events.
TNG:  Any tips for San Diego Comic Con?
Sara:  Yes! Comic Con has gotten SO BIG, and I haven’t gone in a few years, but you definitely can have a fun time, if you plan well. Definitely plan well! Make sure you check the schedule BEFORE hand, really put some time into looking at it and figuring out what you want to do. Wear comfy shoes, I know those super cool shoes that go with your cosplay are awesome, but seriously, it’s a TON of walking and standing, and waiting in lines. Also, bring snacks and drinks: don’t forget to eat and stay hydrated! I’ve seen people faint at cons…and food can be super expensive. And also, have fun…that’s the BEST part.

TNG:  Girlie things you love?
Sara:  You know, I was really super lacking of girlie for most of my life. I was mostly raised by my dad, uncle and hung out with my three brothers. My sisters and I are very tomboyish. But I’ve learned over the years to be more girlie and I think the thing I really enjoy is turning some of the nerdy guy costumes into more girlie ones. I like wearing my girl version of the Doctor, I like adding my blue and silver tutu to an otherwise boring Ravenclaw outfit. I like adding some cute and girly to my costumes!

Thank you Sara for all your awesome answers!  It is so fun getting to know all my new nerdy and girlie friends!  She even let me guest blog on her site, check out The First Time I Found a Fandom:  SDCC on What a Nerd Girl Says! Follow Sara on Twitter @whatanerdgirlsays and check out her books on Amazon: A Little Less Than Famous {I LOVED IT, see my review HERE!} and Another Chance for Summer.
Finally meeting December 2014 at Disneyland!
